Just a few words on pricing

Most artists spend a lot of time deciding on a pricing structure for their artwork. Next to self-promoting, artist dislike pricing the least. As a collector of art, and as an artist, I feel very comfortable working with and buying from artists who have a consistant pricing history. That is where the prices for their artwork does not fluctuate a great deal. I have seen artists who super inflate the price of a piece just because they like a particular artwork. The next month they have a fire sale of greatly reduced prices. This is a self distructive practice that hurts the reputation of the artist, infuriates the purchaser, and frustrates the gallery owner.

As a collector, I feel very comfortable buying from artist's who demonstrate a very slow and steady growth in their pricing.  As an artist, establishing a structure for pricing takes all the guesswork out of it.

Having said all that, I price my paintings considering two basic factors; size and complexity. Size being the prominant of the two. Complexity will vary the pricing to a much lesser degree. The chart below is a good referance in determining my pricing on framed paintings at any given gallery. These prices pertain to oil on canvas or linen for the standard formats that I commonly use.

                12"16"     $910                    20"x24"  $1,540

                16"x20"   $1,210                  24"x30"   $2,750

                18"x20"   $1,265                  24"x36"   $3,200

                18"x24"   $1,430                  36"x40"   $3,850
